Gender inequality refers to unequal treatment of perceptions of people based on their gender.

It appears from differences in socially gender roles as well as biologically through chromosomes, brain structure, and hormonal differences.

Like you could see in the other class with Mari Carmen,men and women are really different but I think only at the appearance.

Gender inequality comes from many years ago when the women were under the power of the men. At  the beginning of the time , the men were the only people who could work or make important things like taking part in the politic, government or do hard work .

 

In many countries the changes are not developed because the women are under the men. They can´t study or work but in Spain, today everybody is equal. 

A woman can work like a judge, doctor, builder and in other side a man can take care of the children,they can work like a cleaner,etc.

               

After that, we can think that the difference or uniqualities are only in our mind. We must work hard to get the equality for everbody because anybody  is different because born girl or  boy. 

And now, we are going to play a game to analyze how men see a woman and how women see a man.

Form mixed pairs

a. The girl in the pair will choose 3 professions from the list of professions for men below.

b. The guy in each pair will choose 3 professions from the list of jobs for women below.

c. Once chosen, each member of the pair argues against the professions chosen by their 
partner, by trying to justify that the professions are not appropriate for him/her.

Natural sex and differences

  With a partner, determine if the statements are true or false in the list.

1. Women have on average 70% more fat than men, 40% less muscle tissue, and are 12.5cm shorter.
2. Men begin puberty approximately 2 years before women.
3. In most countries, men have a lower life expectancy than women, which may be 10 years younger.
4. 50% of men begin to go bald at 50 years of age, as opposed to women.
5. The anatomical differences between men and women develop from the eighth week of gestation, it is impossible to distinguish any difference before.
6. Women have a small percentage of male hormones, and men have a small percentage of female hormones.

There are natural differences between the sexes based on biological and anatomic factors, most notably differing reproductive roles.

Gender inequalities

You know that Gender inequalities, is a big problem all over the world. However it have differents consequences in developed countries than in underdeveloped ones, we have studied some of the differences in general and now, i'm going to talk about gender inequalities at work.

Taking information about the newspaper ABC, gender inequality at work is greater in European countries with social protection, because the initial hypothesis was that if the development of social protection policies is bigger, will be less inequality. 
Because of this, women sometimes suffer psychosocial problems at work.

In Scandinavia directives or professional women showed the highest prevalence in all three psychosocial risks:

41% of these women were exposed to high job demands with little control over them. 34.7% believed they were subjected to heavy demands without the support of their partners. 26.5% thought that invested a lot of emotionally effort in his dedication to work but obtained an insufficient reward or little prospect of progress wage.

I think that if there is a higher proportion of women exposed to psychosocial work-related risks is explained in part by the time spent caring for children or  because they are the dependents of the housework, normally, this jobs falls mainly on women.

On the other hand, the international organization of job say that unemployment rates for women are higher than those of men worldwide and probably it will continue during more years.

Gender Inequality refers to the obvious or hidden disparities among individuals based on the performance of gender. Gender inequality and discrimination are generally discussed as pertaining to women, but anyone can experience gender inequality or discrimination.

Types of Gender Inequality

Gender Inequality exists in most part of the world, for example, in Japan, Morocco, China, India, United States, most of Africa’s countries… But inequality between women and men isn’t everywhere the same. Gender Inequality isn’t a homogeneous phenomenon, but a collection of inter-linked problems. It can take many different forms:

-Mortality Inequality

In some regions in the world, inequality between women and men involves an unusual high mortality rates for women and a consequent preponderance of men in the total population. It has been observed in North Africa, Asia, China and South Asian nations.

-Natality Inequality

In some countries (especially in East Asia, China, Singapore and Taiwan) Gender Inequality can manifest in the form of parents’ wanting a baby to be a boy rather than a girl.

-Special opportunity inequality

Even when there is relatively little difference in basic facilities including schooling, the opportunities of higher education may be far fewer for young women than for young men. Inequality in education and professional training can be observed even in some of the richest countries in the world.

-Professional or Employment inequality

The example of employment inequality can be explained by saying that men get priority in seeking job and promoting in work than women.

-Ownership Inequality

In many societies the ownership of property can also be very unequal. Even basic goods such as homes and land may be very asymmetrically shared. The absence of claims to property can not only reduce the voice of women, but also make it harder for women to enter and participate in commercial, economic and even some social activities.

-Household inequality

There are often enough, basic inequalities in gender relations within the family or the household, which can take many different forms. The family arrangements can be quite unequal in terms of sharing the burden of housework and child care.

Gender Inequality around the world

Although formal rights may be established, women in many countries don’t have equal access to inheritance, they can’t own land or property, suffer from sexual assault or domestic violence, and need to be accompanied by a male member of the family when leaving the house.

The following map shows inequalities in social institutions in the family code, property rights, physical integrity and civil liberties around the world. As indicated by the dark colors, inequalities are particularly pronounced in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and the Middle-East and North Africa.

Fighting for equality

Children and young people should not be underestimated; we can change this situation. If, while we're still at school, boys are given the tools to question the language, images and structures that allow inequality to persist, we can form a new generation of men who can change these inequalities.

Here in the ethics blog we are going to talk about the unequal treatment one.

_ Citizenship : different gender criteria for access to citizenship ( voting , different legal ages , specific legal rules for each gender , etc ...)

_ Opportunities Acess to both basic and specialized education .

_ Work opportunities : sexual segregation or exclusion of labor markets

_ Economic autonomy : maybe limited by employment opportunities but also by the legal structures that limit or restrict the right of ownership and / or inheritance.

_ Health: the social invisibility of gender can seriously affect your health , whether as a result of poor diet or lack of specific health care (for example, cardiac problems detected women are less than men because medical research has tended to focus on the latter paying little attention to women ) .

Speaking of gender inequality is usually referred to social discrimination of women. The situations of gender inequality affecting women worldwide but are specified in different mechanisms in developed countries or in poor countries or developing .

In developed countries, women have equal citizenship and greater legal protection. Education levels are similar to those of men but have more difficulties in the labor market.

In health, medical treatment over women has focused on reproductive health by paying less attention to other topics which creates situations of risk to the health of women.

In poor or developing countries, women suffer greater inequality situations. Access to citizenship is in some countries less than men and the legal protection of women is limited or nonexistent. In many countries, women's access to education is much more limited than that of men.Health is also pending in many countries and in many cases               reproductive health is limited to birth control.

Gender inequality and sexism in songs

Gender inequality is a big problem worldwide. Some people think that gender equality is reached. Others can think: "What more do you want? There have been lots of changes." It's true. We've achieved fantastic things talking about this topic. I'm a man (that's evident, haha), but when I see gender inequality on TV, when I see gender inequality in couples, I think: "How can he/she bear that? I couldn't bear it."

So, for those of you who think that gender equality is reached, and for those who believe that there's still inequalities;  for everybody, let's watch this music videos.

DAYS OF THE WEEK

In this song, TV's clowns (Los payasos de la tele), sing: 

"Monday before lunching, 

a girl went to play,

but she couldn't play, 

because she must iron"

The singers repeat everyday of the week saying that the girl couldn't play because she must do the housework, and finally on Sunday, she went to pray. No day says that a boy sweeps,  whashes the dishes, etc. 

So, this song shows gender inequality in the 70's. The housework is reserved for girls, and boys don't do anything.

THE BOY DOES NOTHING

This song sung by Alesha Dixon is a dialogue between a girl and another person. This person asks her if his boyfriend does the housework, and she constantly repeats "no". Finally, she searches for a boy who do the same things that girls. I let you the chrous of this song:
"Does he wash up? Never washed up 

Does he clean up? No, he never cleans up
Does he brush up? Never brushed up
He does nothing, the boy does nothing"

Lots of reggeaton songs have chauvinist songs. An example of them, is La Muda sung by Caly & El Dandee. They show women as servants of men, that always agree with them. Let's see the lyrics of the song:

"I want a beautiful girl that never said anything,that when I go alone in the night, and I return in the morning, said nothing. 
That althought she doesn't like that I had (drank), she said nothing."

When I write the perfect, I'm using the subjunctive: so when I say "that never said anything", I mean "que no diga na'".

BLURRED LINES

Look at this feminist parody, "Defined lines"

Blurred lines is a very famous song. It's sung by Robin Thicke, and the chauvinist message of this song is treated from the point of view of the woman as a sexual object. The video you have above is a feminist parody. Let's read a part of the lyrics of this song:

Obviously, the verb that rhymes with "hug me" is "f*ck me". If you want to see the original song, click here.

I NEED AIR

Finally, I want to put a song against sexism. It's sung by the famous Pastora  Soler, and the song is called Necesito aire (I need air). It tells the story of a girl  who was with a man, and she was always taking care of him. One day, she  decides to live her life because she realises that we should enjoy it, so she goes to  parties and to have fun... I wish every abused woman has this life philosophy!.  Here are the lyrics of the song:
