An Irishman's philosophy

Do a scheme about the follow famous Irish topic:

In life, there are only two things to worry about—

Either you are well or you are sick.

If you are well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about—

Either you will get well or you will die.

If you get well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you die, there are only two things to worry about—

Either you will go to heaven or hell.

If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about.
And if you go to hell, you’ll be so busy shaking hands with all your friends

You won’t have time to worry!

What you know about Gender inequality

What does “gender equality” really mean? While a person’s sex refers to the biological differences between a male and a female, gender distinguishes the roles a person’s community considers appropriate for women and men. Therefore, gender roles, inequities, and power imbalances are not a “natural” result of biological differences, but are determined by the systems and cultures in which we live. In spite of the fact that there are international laws guaranteeing women equal rights with men, women in many places around the world are denied their rights to land and property, financial resources, employment, and education.

ACTIVITY: did you know? Please, comment the following sentences:

•.It is estimated that women perform two-thirds of the world’s work, yet they only earn one-tenth of the income, and own less than one percent of the world’s property.
•.More than 110 million of the world’s children, two-thirds of them girls, are not in school.
•.Only 17% of the world’s elected government leaders are women.
•.More than 80% of the world’s 35 million refugees and displaced people are women and children

Ideas about Ethics

Some philosophers call ethics the "science of morality". Morality is what someone thinks or feels is good or bad. There are many different moralities, but they share some things. For example most people think that murder (killing somebody) is wrong. Some philosophers have hope to find more things that moralities share. They think that ethics should use the scientific method to study things that people think are good or bad. Their work can be used to test the fairness of a situation, such as how people should treat each other.
Other philosophers think that ethics is separate from morality. They do not think that ethics can be studied using the scientific method and they think it is closer to metaphysics.
Some philosophers believe that ethics is subjective. This means that they think that what is right for me is whatever I say is right. These philosophers do not think that ethics is the same for all people.
Understanding ethics can help people decide what to do when they have choices.

MORALITY

TEXT 3
Morality is the concept of doing the right thing. Morals are basic guidelines for living. Many people have written about ways of choosing what the right thing is. Some believe that there is an objective (true even if you do not agree with it) morality, often thinking it was set out by God or another similar being; others think that morality is subjective (that what is good or bad is your choice).
People can learn morals from religion, parents, friends, school, or reading a book.
It can also be a lesson that someone learns in a book or story. It is usually one line at the end of the story ("The moral of this story is....."). Fables are stories with a moral.
The opposites of "moral" is "immoral", meaning the wrong thing to do. "Amoral" means something that is not related to morality, or has no morally good or bad aspect to it. It is the same as "morally neutral".

ACTIVITY (individually)

Give an example of a moral value that you learnt from:

  • religion

  • your parents

  • your friends

  • your school (teachers)

  • a book or a film that you liked
